PSU Ad Management Group Recognized by GM and Citibank

(Portland, Ore.) December 4, 2002: General Motors (GM) and Citibank have recognized the Advertising Management Program At the School of Business at Portland State University (SBA) for its work in the two companies' education programs.

PSU won second place in the 2002 General Motors Marketing Internship Scholastic Achievement Awards. The award was for work that PSU advertising students did on a special project for the Pontiac Vibe. PSU was one of three universities nationally to receive the Vibe assignment and one of more than 100 colleges competing for the Scholastic Achievement Awards. The University of Southern California took first place.

The General Motors Marketing Internship (GMMI) program provides an opportunity for students to work on a real world project and show GM divisions how to promote to the college market at the same time. The GMMI program is managed by EdVenture Partners of Berkeley, California.

The award was given to PSU for the "Gen V Experience" on- campus promotion created and executed by students in the SBA. According to EdVenture Partners CEO Tony Sgro, "Students in the PSU Advertising class won the second place national award for creativity and effectiveness in combining the Pontiac Vibe and the PSU Viking Athletic Department into one huge, on-campus promotion and event."

Citibank has also recognized the University by making it one of three schools nationally to receive a second assignment from Citibank Credit Education Program. In spring 2003, PSU business students will again form a marketing agency and produce a campaign about responsible money management. The Credit-Ed Program is one of several initiatives designed by Citibank to increase financial literacy among young adults.

For the 2002 Citibank assignment, PSU students wrote and produced two 60-second radio public service announcements (PSAs) that aired on Portland radio stations. Created by students for students, both spots highlighted the importance of creating a good credit history. Citibank is making these PSAs available nationally for use on radio stations that appeal to young adults.

Students doing the work for GM and Citibank were supervised by Don Dickinson, director of Advertising Management in the SBA. îWe have a strong reputation for doing great work for national clients, so we tend to get the premier assignments like Citibank and the Vibe," said Dickinson. "The 'Paper or Plastic?' theme the students developed last year for Citibank Credit-ED was extremely creative and effective in getting student attention and delivering the message. We are honored to be the only school outside of the east coast to be asked back in 2003." For more information on the GM and Citibank promotions, visit www.adbiz.sba.pdx.edu.
