Undergraduate Retention Policy
Grade Requirements
After you have been admitted to the School of Business Administration (SBA), you must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) at PSU of at least 2.50; you must also maintain a GPA of at least 2.50 in all SBA courses taken at PSU. If either of these GPA's fall below 2.50 you will be placed on probation.
Please note that the SBA probation policy is different and more stringent than the PSU policy, which is described within the current PSU bulletin. You will receive a letter from the SBA stating that you have been placed on probation and the quarter that the probation is effective. In the first quarter of the probationary period in which you take classes you must show progress by raising your deficient GPA(s); if you do not, termination will occur at the end of that quarter. If your deficient GPA(s) rises, but not to the 2.50 minimum, you will be allowed a second quarter of probation. At the end of the second quarter in which you take classes both the cumulative PSU GPA and the PSU business GPA must be 2.50 or higher. If you do not achieve this, your admitted status in the SBA will be terminated.
A probationary period may extend into a third quarter if (1) you are inactive in the first quarter of probation (no classes taken at PSU), (2) if at the end of the first quarter of probation you raise your GPA(s) but not to the 2.50 and your second quarter is inactive, or (3) if both the first and second quarters are totally inactive. In no instance will the probationary period extend beyond three consecutive quarters beginning with the quarter for which the probation is effective.
If termination occurs and you still wish to pursue a degree in business administration, you may reapply for admission after both your cumulative PSU GPA and your PSU business GPA are 2.75 or higher. When you reapply, you must also meet all other admission requirements which are in effect for the quarter for which readmission is requested. (Please note that since Fall 1991, the GPA requirements for admission are 2.75.) If termination occurs a second time, you will not be able to earn a degree in business administration at PSU.
If you find that you are having problems in a course(s) please talk with the instructor; do not wait until the problem shows up as a final grade of D or F. If you find yourself placed on probation and do not understand the options available to you, make an appointment with your Undergraduate Programs Administrator in the Student Services Office, SBA 240.
If you are on probation and anything occurs that would raise your GPA, you are responsible for advising the Student Services Office. For example, you had an “I” in a course and you complete the work to remove the incomplete, or an instructor determines that you were given an incorrect grade and submits a grade change. This type of change may not appear in the database in a timely manner so it is up to you to supply us with evidence of these changes.
Satisfactory Progress
In addition to maintaining 2.50 GPA's in cumulative PSU coursework and in business courses taken at PSU, you are expected to make satisfactory progress toward your declared major. The requirement of the SBA is that you complete a minimum of nine quarter hours during each academic year. If you do not meet this requirement your admission to the SBA may be canceled. In these cases your file in the SBA is retained for a calendar year. If you apply for admission at a later time you will need to submit all application documents and meet all requirements for admission which are in effect at that time.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
At PSU, the GPA is based on the total graded points earned divided by the total graded quarter credit hours completed. A business GPA is calculated using credits from Accounting, BA, Finance, ISQA, Management, and Marketing. The following point scale is used:
